Top Tips
- Immersion depth. Thermometers available are total or partial immersion. Total immersion thermometers are designed to give correct readings when completely immersed in the medium under test. Partial immersion thermometers are calibrated to read correctly when immersed to defined depth (usually 76mm)
- Faults during transit. Thermometers may develop faults during transit or when otherwise subject to undue vibration. Most faults can be corrected by following these suggestions:
- Gas trapped in bulb. Tap any bubbles of gas into the top of the bulb then cool the bulb in a suitably cold medium. As the mercury contracts the trapped gas should be forced above the mercury
- Broken thread. The mercury or spirit thread may be re-joined by cooling
- Detached mercury at the top of contraction chamber. Cool the bulb until mercury comes down into the contraction chamber. The side of the stem should be gently tapped until the detached mercury forms a globule on the wall of the contraction chamber. By gently heating the bulb this mercury can be re-joined to the main column
- Detached mercury in the expansion chamber. Tap the top of the stem until the detached mercury collects at the top of the capillary. Very carefully heat the thermometer. As the expanding mercury forces gas into the expansion chamber, continue to tap the stem in order to keep the detached mercury on top of the capillary
- Maximum/minimum thermometers. For broken threads, hold at the top and give a sharp shake
