Putting It All Together – The Writing Formula
Understanding that the vast range of different substances are combinations of relativiely few elements is a cornerstone of Chemistry.
The Philip Harris formula model sives student a simple, hands on model to explore chemical bonding.
Using a simple ‘Jigsaw’ analogue, the model provides a dynamic, visual and tactile method to see which combinations work and which don’t.
Magnetic pieces (that can be used on the same back board as the Structure and Bonding kit) are used to represent different elements or functional groups and to allow the construction of simple ‘ionic’ compounds. The visual nature of the jigsaw pieces make it easy for students to work out the ratios required to achieve a neutral compound.
