Science Week Fun! 5 Easy Experiments to Try in Your Classroom

Science Week is the perfect opportunity to spark curiosity, creativity, and a love of discovery in your classroom! You don’t need a fancy lab or expensive equipment — just a few simple materials (many of which you’ll find in our Science & STEM range at ABC School Supplies) and a big dose of enthusiasm.

Here are 5 simple, hands-on experiments perfect for junior and senior primary classes.

🧪 1. Dancing Raisins

What you need: Clear glass, fizzy water, raisins.
How it works: Drop a few raisins into the glass of fizzy water. Watch as they sink, then rise, then sink again! The carbon dioxide bubbles stick to the raisins and lift them up — when the bubbles pop, they fall back down.
STEM skill: Observing and explaining cause and effect.

🌋 2. Mini Volcano

What you need: Baking soda, vinegar, food colouring, cup or small bottle.
How it works: Place baking soda in the cup, add food colouring, and pour in vinegar. Watch your mini volcano erupt with fizzy “lava”!
STEM skill: Learning about chemical reactions (acid + base).

🫧 3. Bubble Geometry

What you need: Bubble wands, string, pipe cleaners, soapy water.
How it works: Create 3D shapes using pipe cleaners or straws (cube, pyramid, etc.). Dip them into the bubble solution to see how bubbles form inside the shapes.
STEM skill: Exploring surface tension and geometry.

🧃 4. Sink or Float Challenge

What you need: A tub of water, everyday objects (coin, cork, apple, spoon, rubber).
How it works: Predict which items will sink or float — then test!
STEM skill: Making predictions, testing hypotheses, comparing results.

🌞 5. Solar Art

What you need: Construction paper, leaves, keys, or stencils.
How it works: Place objects on dark paper and leave in the sun for a few hours. The sunlight fades the exposed paper, leaving a silhouette behind.
STEM skill: Investigating the effects of sunlight and UV exposure.
