Guiding Reading will help teachers in Key Stage 2 (ages 7 to 11) develop their practice in teaching Guided Reading effectively. Its focus is on the knowledge and skills that teachers need to enable children to become more efficient and more self-aware readers. It includes lists of over 500 texts recommended by teachers who have used them successfully. They are organised by text type and year group, with a section on more challenging texts for each year group. The lists include trade books, scheme books and other media, from a range of genres. Publication data is provided so that schools can order them if necessary. Sections on the development of children as readers in Key Stage 2, and planning Guided Reading, are followed by a substantial section containing 24 exemplar lessons. It also includes sections with ideas for using the book in professional development courses, a useful list of books for further reading and the NLS Illustrative Target Statements for reading.
