Course Overview

The Numicon professional development workshops provide an opportunity for new and existing users to discover the potential of Numicon and consider the next steps in supporting your school.

To support you on your journey for best practice and high achievement in maths, we’re pleased to host a professional development workshop to give you the best possible start with Numicon and wider maths issues.

What is Numicon?

Numicon is a multi-sensory approach, built on a proven pedagogy that raises achievement across all mathematics ability levels. With problem-solving, reasoning and conversation at its heart, Numicon ensures every child can enjoy success in mathematics.
• Develops fluency by using a visual, practical base to develop conceptual understanding and fluent recall.
• Helps children to reason mathematically through the use of concrete objects and spoken language to explain and justify.

Session 1: An Introduction to Numicon

Learning Outcomes:

  • Develop an understanding of the Numicon Manipulatives that were developed to support the Concrete Pictorial Abstract approach.
  • Understand how Numicon addresses the learning needs of all children to develop mastery through low threshold, high ceiling activities, pupil practice and deep questioning.
  • Discover useful ideas and strategies which can be applied back in your classroom

Session 2: Using Numicon to understand, represent and calculate with fractions

Learning outcomes:

  • Explore a range of Numicon manipulatives that support the CPA approach to teaching
  • Consider how to develop a deep understanding of fractions through tried and  tested planning, teaching and assessment materials
  • Inspire you to apply these ideas and strategies to your own classroom

Using Numicon to solve puzzles and problems

Learning outcomes:

  • Explore a range of Numicon manipulatives to support children to build their problem-solving skills.
  • Consider different categories of low threshold, high ceiling puzzles and problems that can be adapted to work across a range of year groups.
  • Inspire you to apply these ideas and strategies to your own classroom

Rebecca Holland leads a team of highly skilled professionals who provide outstanding quality training for teachers, support staff and other educational professionals working with individuals with Down syndrome, in mainstream and special schools and colleges throughout Ireland and the UK.
